It was a quiet Sunday afternoon in Midville, Lincolnshire, when Paul Skinner, a 58-year-old cyclist, and his friend were enjoying a peaceful ride along the countryside roads. The calm air and gentle sounds of birdsong made for a perfect outing. But as they pedaled down Hob Hole Bank, something caught Paul’s eye on the roadside.

At first, it looked like a discarded bag or perhaps a dead bird. But then it moved. Curious and concerned, Paul stopped to investigate. What he discovered was heartbreaking: a small spaniel lying beside a plastic bag, her head resting protectively on it. The dog had no collar and appeared utterly alone.

When Paul carefully untied the bag, the horrifying truth was revealed—inside were four lifeless puppies. The spaniel was gently licking and nuzzling the bag, as if trying to wake her babies. Tears seemed to glisten in her eyes, and she refused to leave their side.

“I couldn’t believe anyone could be so devoid of humanity,” Paul said, describing the devastating scene.

Paul immediately alerted local authorities, including the police, RSPCA, and Finn Bank Greyhound Sanctuary. Mick Fern, the sanctuary’s kennel manager and a police community support officer, arrived to assist. Despite their efforts to save the puppies, it was too late.

The grieving spaniel was taken into the sanctuary’s care. Investigations are underway to find those responsible for this cruel act, but no leads have surfaced yet.

This tragic story highlights both the depths of human cruelty and the incredible loyalty and resilience of animals. Thanks to Paul’s intervention, the brave little dog now receives the care she deserves—a powerful reminder to stay vigilant and kind toward vulnerable animals everywhere.
