Texas Newlyweds Tragically Killed Just Hours After Fairytale Wedding
In a heartbreaking turn of events, two Sam Houston State University seniors, Will Byler and Bailey Ackerman Byler, were killed in a helicopter crash just hours after their wedding. The couple had tied the knot in a beautiful outdoor ceremony on November 3, 2018, at the Byler family ranch in Uvalde, Texas. The day, described by guests as a “fairy tale wedding,” was filled with love, joy, and celebration.

Will and Bailey, both deeply involved in agricultural studies and university life, had planned to travel in style for their honeymoon. They boarded a Bell 206B helicopter—owned by Will’s family—shortly after their reception. Tragically, just 15 miles into the flight, the helicopter crashed into the side of a hill, killing the newlyweds and experienced pilot Gerald Lawrence.
Search and rescue teams discovered the wreckage the following morning. The crash site was difficult to access, making recovery efforts more challenging. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) launched an investigation and confirmed clear weather conditions at the time of the flight. However, the cause of the crash remains undetermined.
Sam Houston State University confirmed the devastating loss through a public statement, honoring the couple’s contributions to the community and student life. Friends, family, and even strangers flooded social media with condolences, mourning the loss of the young couple whose lives had just begun.
A memorial service was held on November 8, 2018, drawing hundreds to honor Will and Bailey. They were later laid to rest together at the Byler ranch—a final tribute to the love they shared and the dreams they never got to fulfill.
